WHITESBURG, Ky. — The suspect in the shooting death of a Letcher County woman was arrested overnight.

Lawrence “Eugene” Halcomb, 39, of Blackey, was wanted for murder and fetal homicide. Police say he is believed to be the person responsible for shooting and killing 43-year-old Vanessa Halcomb, of Linefork, Thursday afternoon.

Trooper Matt Gayheart, public information officer with Post 13 in Hazard, said Halcomb was located Friday night and was arrested after a brief standoff.

Earlier Friday evening, Gayheart said KSP had received information regarding the general area of Halcomb’s location and they canvassed homes in the area.

Halcomb was taken to a hospital following his arrest, but he has now been booked in the Letcher County Jail. He is not only charged with murder and fetal homicide in the death of Vanessa Halcomb, but also with a strangulation case from Aug. 10 and charges of fleeing police, reckless driving and wanton endangerment from Aug. 16.

He is being held without bond.
